MOBILE WORKERS ACCELERATION
|
ACCELERATE MOBILE WORKERS
Employees in many businesses are now mobile. They are required to be out of the office in order to get their jobs done. That means being at the customer site, traveling to partner offices, or even visiting other offices within the company.
For most users, being out of the office generally means that they are significantly less productive. They have limited access to key data and applications, and co-workers generally accept that collaboration will be difficult, particularly if they rely upon a VPN or SSL/HTTPS connection to access data. Traveling workers desperately search for high-quality Internet connections in hotels and in airports in order to communicate with project teams, keep in touch with customers, and keep business moving. For sales teams, traveling executives, and other mobile workers, poor connectivity has simply become a cost of doing business: they have to work longer hours to get the same or less work done than they would in the office.
With a mobile wide-area data services (WDS) solution like Steelhead Mobile, mobile workers can now have the same LAN-like access to applications and data that employees in the office have. These solutions use software running on the end-users' machine to connect with an appliance in the data center.
By creating an optimized connection, users can dramatically reduce the amount of data that they need to send over the WAN, while at the same time streamlining the chatty behavior of transport and application protocols. In the case of Oracle forms and MAPI 2007, these benefits are extended further to the application layer, layer 7, which provides even greater acceleration for Oracle E-Business Suite and Exchange 2007 users. The end result is that applications can run 5, 50, or even up to 100 times faster.
For mobile workers, this means that they can be productive again. They can collaborate with co-workers in real time. Design documents, Excel files, or even large email attachments can be sent at blazing speeds around the world. Being on the road is no longer a barrier to getting their jobs done.
STEELHEAD MOBILE 2.0
With Steelhead Mobile enterprises can give mobile workers LAN-like access to corporate files and applications no matter where they are, anywhere in the world. With a simple software package installed transparently on their laptops or desktops, all of the powerful benefits of RiOS are available to the end-user.
Steelhead Mobile works by interacting directly with any Steelhead appliance to optimize applications the same way in which two Steelhead devices would work together. At least one Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC) is required to manage Steelhead Mobile licensing.
For end-users, applications and collaboration work exactly the same - simply much faster. No changes are required to applications or the normal processes that workers are used to. IT managers do not need to make any changes to routers, VPN infrastructure, SSL/HTTPS servers, or any of the other key technology in their enterprise. In fact, IT managers can control whether or not end-users see anything at all (like the Steelhead Mobile system tray icon), or if they want Steelhead Mobile to be completely invisible to the end-users.
Software is pushed out to end-user machines via MSI packages. Using the Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC), IT administrators control the installation process as well as the configuration policies that determine what optimizations take place per user or groups of users.
With Steelhead Mobile, mobile workers can be more productive than they ever imagined would be possible.
STEELHEAD MOBILE CONTROLLER
The Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC) manages Steelhead Mobile licenses and controls the deployment, management, and reporting of Steelhead Mobile software clients. Using the SMC, IT managers can quickly and easily deploy Steelhead Mobile to all of their remote workers and employees on the go.
The SMC is a 1U rackable appliance that manages Steelhead Mobile deployments through optimization policy control, detailed user-level reporting, and administrative troubleshooting capability.
Fast and Easy User Deployment
The SMC uses simple MSI software packages to push out the Steelhead Mobile software client to end-user laptops and PCs. The software can be deployed in "visible" mode whereby users can see the Steelhead Mobile r software running in their icon tray and can adjust a few options, or "invisible" mode, where only the administrator knows that the Steelhead Mobile software is running on the machine.
Because the SMC manages licenses on a concurrent user basis, administrators can deploy Steelhead Mobile to all end-user machines as part of their standard build. When users require a connection they automatically check with the SMC for an available license and then begin their optimized sessions.
Scalable Concurrent Licensing Model
The Steelhead Mobile product uses an easy-to-manage, scalable concurrent licensing model. Instead of buying a license for each individual end-user, IT administrators simply manage a 'pool' of licenses on a Steelhead Mobile Controller. These licenses can be used by anyone running the Steelhead Mobile software on their laptop. Then users around the organization can all take advantage of Steelhead Mobile's acceleration benefits. IT administrators get simplified and scalable management of licenses: costs are controlled by how many licenses are purchased, and new licenses can easily be added to the pool of concurrent licenses. Link-based licensing and enhanced Steelhead auto-detection make individual licenses go even further by allowing license management at the adaptor level and by releasing a license when a local Steelhead appliance can be used for optimization. This flexibility allows IT administrators the additional benefit of making Steelhead Mobile software part of the standard operating environment, including the software on every machine as they image it, without incurring additional costs.
In-depth Reporting
Similar to the Central Management Console for Steelhead appliances, the SMC includes in-depth reporting on Steelhead Mobile client performance. Using the SMC, IT managers can report aggregated or individual statistics on throughput improvements as well as bandwidth optimization.
Highly Scalable
Each SMC can support up to 2,000 concurrent Steelhead Mobile clients and can also be clustered to scale beyond the per SMC limit. Clustering also creates high availability configurations that ensure users always have accelerated mobile access to key applications and data.
